Lake Neusiedl is a steppe lake, known for its shallow waters—most areas are only about a metre deep, with the deepest points just under two metres. This means you can stand almost anywhere in the water, making it ideal for swimming, windsurfing, and sailing. In winter, the lake usually freezes over, creating one of the region’s most beautiful ice surfaces, perfect for ice skating. Neusiedlersee is located in southern Austria, right on the border with Hungary. Most of the lake lies within Austria, with a smaller section in Hungary. Recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Neusiedlersee is a protected natural area. Read more

The Role of Lake Neusiedl in the Reunification of Germany

In 1989, a movement began that led many citizens of the former East Germany to attempt to cross to the West via Lake Neusiedl. This was made easier because there was a bridge on the Hungarian side, and the border fence that separated East Germany had been removed, allowing free passage. On 19 August, the Pan-European Picnic took place near Sopron, Hungary. Hundreds of East Germans used this opportunity to cross into Austria and continue on to West Germany. In the following months, thousands more East Germans crossed the border. These events contributed to the fall of the Berlin Wall later that year, paving the way for German reunification in 1990.
