Rab Island is located just off the northern coast of Croatia in the Adriatic Sea. It is a popular summer destination for tourists and stretches for 22 kilometres. The main town on the island, also called Rab, is situated on a peninsula on the southwest side. The southwest part of the island is densely forested, while the northeast is more barren. The highest point is Kamenjak, which stands at 408 metres. Rab is first mentioned in a Greek source from 360 BC as Arba, meaning something like ‘dark, green, forested’—likely referring to the island’s forests. It was inhabited by the Illyrians before becoming part of the Roman and later the Byzantine Empire. In 1000 AD, Venice took control, ruling—with some interruptions—until the late 18th century. Until 1918, Rab was part of Austria-Hungary under the Habsburgs. After that, many Italian-speaking residents wanted to join Italy, but the island became part of Yugoslavia, and later, in 1991, Croatia became independent. During the Second World War, Italian fascists established a concentration camp on the island. In 1953, a memorial was erected in the town of Kampor at the site of the camp. Read more
