Campsites in Versailles

Who hasn’t heard of Versailles? Most people immediately think of the magnificent palace of the Sun King, the dazzling Hall of Mirrors, and the vast gardens. Camping probably isn’t the first thing that comes to mind. But it’s actually a great idea. The area offers beautiful natural surroundings beyond the palace gardens, and Paris is just a short trip away. It’s the best of both worlds! Versailles is located in the Yvelines department, southwest of Paris. With a population of over 85,000, it serves as the main town of the area. Interestingly, the name Versailles is thought to mean ‘field’ or ‘marsh’. Read more

The Palace of Versailles

The must-see attraction in this area is, of course, the Palace of Versailles. Originally built as a hunting lodge for King Louis XIII in 1624, it was transformed into a sprawling estate (spanning 800 hectares) by his son Louis XIV in 1680. It became the principal royal residence, the seat of government, and the military headquarters of France. Its opulence set the standard for French fashion, architecture, and luxury worldwide.

The palace has witnessed many pivotal moments in history. The French Revolution brought an end to the monarchy, and in 1919, the Treaty of Versailles was signed in the Hall of Mirrors. Not only is the palace itself worth a visit, but so are the extensive gardens, stables, the Grand Trianon, the Petit Trianon, the ministers’ wings, and more. Queen Marie-Antoinette even created a small model village, Le Hameau de la Reine, where she could enjoy a taste of rural life. You could easily spend several days exploring the entire estate.
