Erfurt is the capital of the German state of Thuringia. The city is well-known as the birthplace and training location for several top German speed skaters. The renowned Friesinger siblings trained here, and the Erfurt ice rink is named after legendary skater Gunda Niemann, who was also born in the city. Erfurt has had a university since 1392, making it the third city in Germany to establish one, after Cologne and Heidelberg. Its most famous student was Martin Luther, who studied there between 1501 and 1505.
