Corfu is a Greek island that forms part of the Ionian Islands and is located in the Ionian Sea. It is the northwesternmost point of Greece, situated off the Greek coast and also close to the coast of Albania. The capital of the island, also called Corfu (or Kerkyra), is found on the east coast. Corfu has a rich history, with many traces still visible across the island. The first mention of Corfu dates back to 1300 BC. After many wars and conquests, the island was governed by the Republic of Venice from 1386 to 1797, after which it was occupied by France. Corfu served as a stronghold against the Ottomans, leading to the construction of numerous forts. Venetian influence is clearly reflected in the many buildings and fortresses on the island. Following a period as a British protectorate, Corfu became part of the newly formed country of Greece in 1864. Read more
