The province of Utrecht is located in the center of the Netherlands and is the smallest province in the country. It is also the most densely populated province and is partly considered part of the Randstad metropolitan area. The capital of Utrecht province is also called Utrecht. Historically, the city of Utrecht was the center of the diocese known as Sticht Utrecht, which marked the beginning of the province. The first bishop, Willibrord, was consecrated in 695. From Utrecht, much of the northern Netherlands was converted to Christianity. Later, the bishops of Utrecht gained not only spiritual authority but also secular power over the area. In 1528, Emperor Charles V separated these powers, becoming the secular ruler himself, with governors (stadtholders) carrying out these duties on his behalf. Read more

The Best Days Out in Utrecht Province

The Historic City Centre of Utrecht

No visit is complete without exploring the historic heart of Utrecht city. This lively student city is full of pubs and restaurants. Be sure to visit the Dom Tower, climb to the top for a stunning view, and discover the city’s history underground at DOMunder. Utrecht boasts several museums, including the Catharijneconvent, the Railway Museum (great for children), and the Centraal Museum. You can shop to your heart’s content and enjoy theatre performances or concerts at various venues around the city. There’s always plenty to do.

Amersfoort

The province’s other major city is Amersfoort, known for its medieval centre with canals and historic architecture. Several city gates from the original walls, built between 1380 and 1450, still stand today, such as the Koppelpoort, the Kamperbinnenpoort, and the Monnikendam. Guided city walks and canal tours are a wonderful way to discover Amersfoort, including its old courtyards. The city is also the birthplace of Piet Mondrian, and his former home now serves as the Mondriaan Museum. Just outside the city, Amersfoort Zoo is a fun destination for all ages.

The Heksenwaag in Oudewater

In the town of Oudewater, you’ll find the historic weighing house, or Heksenwaag, where people accused of witchcraft were weighed between the 16th and 18th centuries. In 1545, Oudewater was granted the right to hold fair trials by Emperor Charles V, making it unique in Europe. No one was ever found to be a witch here. Visitors today can be weighed themselves and receive a certificate proving they’re not a witch. There’s also a museum upstairs about witch trials across Europe.

Castle de Haar in Haarzuilens

This impressive castle and its surrounding estate are well worth a visit. Guided tours inside the castle reveal its fascinating history. Originally a fortified medieval home of the De Haar family, it was destroyed in 1482 and rebuilt. At the end of the 19th century, Baron Etienne van Zuylen van Nijevelt inherited the dilapidated estate and, with the help of his wife Hélène de Rothschild, restored it. Architect Pierre Cuypers designed the luxurious new castle, featuring innovations such as running water, electricity, a Turkish bath, and a lift—unmatched even by royal standards of the time. The family still stays in the castle during September; the rest of the year, it is open to visitors. In summer, the estate hosts the fantasy festival Elfia.

Ouwehands Zoo

Located in Rhenen, Ouwehands Zoo is famous for its Bear Forest, a sanctuary for rescued bears who previously endured harsh conditions as dancing bears, film animals, or circus performers. Since 2017, the zoo has also been home to two giant pandas on loan from China.
