The New Forest is an area in the south of England, located in the county of Hampshire. It largely overlaps with the New Forest National Park. Despite its name, the New Forest is not just woodland; it's a mix of ancient woodlands, open heathland, and grassy plains. It's the largest area of unspoilt countryside in Southeast England. The history of the New Forest dates back to around 1079, when William the Conqueror declared it a royal forest, primarily for deer hunting. To create this royal hunting ground, several villages and farms were cleared from the area, which is why it became known as the ‘new’ forest. There are also stories that William’s sons, Prince Richard and King William II, both died in the New Forest, with some legends suggesting these events were acts of retribution. Read more

The unique character of the area is that the original residents still have the right to let their animals, especially ponies and cattle, graze on the common land. This grazing helps to maintain the park, which means you'll see animals throughout the New Forest. In the villages, precautions are taken to prevent the animals from wandering into gardens, homes, and buildings. Cattle grids are commonly placed at driveways to keep the animals out.
