Camping in Caen

Caen is a city in Normandy and the capital of the former Lower Normandy and the Calvados department. It is located close to the Channel coast, with the Orne river running through the city. Caen is the second largest city in Normandy. From Caen, you can easily reach the beautiful Normandy coast, travel to Paris, or take a ferry to England.

The area where Caen now stands was already settled in Gallo-Roman times under the name Gadomus, with a church dedicated to Saint Martin. The city was attacked several times by Vikings, but peace returned under William the Conqueror. He built a castle and the men’s abbey, Abbaye aux Hommes. His wife, Matilda, founded the women’s abbey, Abbaye aux Dames. He also strengthened the city’s defences.

Despite these efforts, Caen was destroyed in 1346 by Edward III of England, with only the castle remaining. In 1944, the city was heavily bombed before being liberated by British forces in July. Reconstruction began shortly after.
