Sights in Rouen

The city’s rich and long history means there are many highlights to explore. Here are just a few, though the full list is much longer:

Notre-Dame Cathedral of Rouen

The construction of this Gothic cathedral began in 1145 and was only completed in the 16th century. Here you can visit the heart of Charles V, as well as the tombs of Richard the Lionheart and Rollo, the leader of the Normans and the first Duke of Normandy.

Le Gros-Horloge

This is one of Rouen’s most famous landmarks. It’s a monumental archway crossing the Rue du Gros-Horloge, featuring a clock that was installed here in 1527 after previously hanging in the adjacent belfry.

Place du Vieux-Marché

This square, with its covered market halls and timber-framed houses, was used in the Middle Ages as an execution site for criminals. Joan of Arc was famously burned at the stake here in 1431. Today, the square features a modern church, a monument, and a museum in her memory. There are several more buildings in Rouen linked to this iconic figure.

Musée des Beaux-Arts

This museum showcases highlights of Western European art, including paintings, sculptures, and furniture from the 16th century to the present day. Works by artists such as Rubens and Caravaggio are on display.

Normandy: Worth Exploring

It’s not just the capital city that’s worth a visit—Normandy as a whole is beautiful. Rouen is within easy reach of the coast, making day trips to the D-Day beaches like Omaha Beach and Utah Beach possible, as well as the famous white cliffs at Étretat, Mont Saint Michel, and the Bayeux Tapestry. In short, there’s plenty to see and do in this picturesque region!
