Saint-Sacerdos Cathedral

This cathedral is dedicated to Saint Sacerdos of Limoges.

The Lantern of the Dead

This unique funerary tower was built to guide the souls of the departed with its evening light. These towers are rare and are a distinctly French tradition. This one was erected in 1147 to commemorate Saint Bernard's passing through the area on his return from the Crusade.

House of La Boétie

This 16th-century house belonged to the writer and jurist Étienne de La Boétie, who was also a political philosopher and friend of Montaigne. Sarlat’s weekly market is well worth a visit, offering a fantastic selection of local produce. Throughout the year, the town also hosts a variety of festivals and events, such as the Truffle Festival and the Film Festival.

The Dordogne

The rest of the Dordogne region is equally fascinating, with charming towns like Périgueux, Beynac, Montignac, Nontron, and Bergerac, each with its own unique character. The area is famous for its prehistoric caves, some of which feature ancient cave paintings. The most famous is Lascaux; while the original is closed to protect the artwork, an excellent replica is open to visitors.
