What to See in Hamburg
Hamburg was heavily bombed during the Second World War, resulting in the loss of many historic buildings. Over the years, several landmarks have been carefully restored to their original state:
Speicherstadt
This district is home to the Kontorhausviertel and the Chilehaus, which are listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
St. Catherine’s Church
Dating back to the 14th century, St. Catherine’s Church was largely destroyed during the bombing of Hamburg in 1945. Reconstruction took place between 1950 and 1957, and further restoration from 2007 to 2012 returned the church to its former glory.
Hamburg Hauptbahnhof
This is the busiest train station in Germany, serving hundreds of thousands of passengers every day with direct routes across Germany and into Denmark.
The New Cathedral of St. Mary
This church was built at the end of the 19th century, after Roman Catholicism had been banned for many years. It was badly damaged during the 1943 bombings but has since been rebuilt.
St. Pauli Elbe Tunnel
Opened in 1911, this was the first underwater tunnel in Europe. Pedestrians, cyclists, and cars are transported to the tunnel tubes by lifts, which limits the tunnel’s capacity but adds to its unique character.
