The Rhine is surrounded by many myths and legends. One famous story is that of the Mouse Tower, which took place on a small island in the river. Another is the legend of Loreley, a nymph who lived by the Rhine but was driven away as people settled along the banks. Unable to leave the river, Loreley made her home atop a high cliff, where her beauty and singing enchanted passing sailors, often leading them to crash their ships on the rocks.
River cruise boats travel up and down the Rhine every day, and there are plenty of places to hop on board. Seeing the landscape from the water offers a whole new perspective, from the sunlit green hillsides to the historic towns along the banks. A boat trip on the Rhine can also be a romantic experience for couples, especially between Koblenz and Rüdesheim, where the river narrows and winds through truly picturesque scenery.
