The earliest inhabitants are believed to have settled around 3500 BC on the hill of the Acropolis. After enduring many wars, the city eventually became a democracy and an important center of art and science in the 4th century BC, with renowned residents such as Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle. Following periods of Roman, Ottoman, and Venetian rule, Greece was officially recognized as an independent state in 1829. The drive for independence was fueled by a renewed interest in ancient history during the 18th century, which attracted many wealthy visitors from the West.
