What to See in Flevoland
There are plenty of excursions to enjoy in this young province. Here are some highlights:
Walibi Holland
This theme park in Biddinghuizen is fun for the whole family. Thrill-seekers will find exciting rollercoasters, some reaching impressive speeds. If that's a bit too much, or the rides aren't suitable yet, there are plenty of other attractions to enjoy. One day is usually enough to explore the park.
The Oostvaardersplassen
This nature reserve is unique in the Netherlands. The wildlife documentary ‘De Nieuwe Wildernis’ was filmed here, showcasing the lives of the many wild animals in the area. Large grazers such as Heck cattle, konik horses, and red deer roam free, and even the white-tailed eagle has returned to nest here in recent years. You can explore the reserve by walking or cycling along its trails and observe the animals. For more information, visit the De Oostvaarders nature experience centre or join one of the guided excursions in the area.
Urk
The former island of Urk is a lively fishing village. The island feeling is still strong among the local residents. Despite land reclamation, the village still boasts the largest fishing fleet in the Netherlands, now operating in the North Sea. The harbour is the beating heart of the village. Highlights include the lighthouse from 1844 with its beautiful views, the sandy beach, the Bethel Church, and the Urk Fishermen’s Monument. Wandering through the old streets and dining at one of the many fish restaurants is highly recommended.
Aviodrome
Aviodrome is an aviation and aerospace museum in Lelystad. Here you can admire various aircraft both inside and out, and even sit in the cockpit of a Boeing 747 to feel like a real pilot. You can also experience a sightseeing flight over Aviodrome with a professional pilot and try your hand at the controls of a Fokker Four, a Cessna 172, or even the Catalina seaplane! Children and aviation fans will love this day out.
Bataviawerf
The Bataviawerf offers a unique opportunity to see a ship from the Dutch Golden Age. Here, a replica of the Batavia (originally built in 1629) has been on display since 1995. The ship of Michiel de Ruyter, the Zeven Provinciën, from the same era, has also been reconstructed and is open to visitors. You can explore the workshops where these replicas were built, including a blacksmith’s forge, a sailmaker’s loft, and a model workshop.
