Central Sweden is home to many small islands, making it a great place for island hopping. This means travelling from one island to another, giving you the chance to explore the stunning Swedish scenery at your own pace. Camping is an excellent option here, as it gives you the freedom to decide how long to stay on each island without fixed plans. Central Sweden is easily accessible by car, caravan, or campervan. To cross the sea, you can take a ferry, or travel by car across the bridge connecting Denmark and Sweden, arriving near Malmö and continuing your journey from there. Island hopping is a wonderful idea for campers, letting you create your own itinerary as you go.
The coast around Stockholm is dotted with more than 24,000 islands, so you’re sure to find one that matches your preferences. Many of these islands are covered in forests, offering great opportunities for spotting wildlife such as bears, wolves, and foxes. Central Sweden is also perfect for walking and cycling enthusiasts, with plenty of cycling and hiking trails to discover.
Once you've explored the islands, there's still plenty more to see and do in Central Sweden. Uppsala, Sweden’s fourth largest city, is just over an hour’s drive from Stockholm, making it an excellent next stop after your island adventures.
Uppsala boasts a fantastic museum called Biotopia, where you can learn all about surviving in Sweden’s wilderness. If you’re eager to see what you’ve learned in real life, you can visit one of the local nature parks, where there’s even the opportunity to get up close with moose. The city also offers a wide range of inviting restaurants for a delicious lunch, and there’s plenty to see and do, making it well worth a stay of a few days.

In summer, Central Sweden typically enjoys mild weather, so you don’t have to worry about camping in the rain every night—a real advantage, as bad weather can put a damper on your holiday.
