Discover Le Havre!
If you’re a fan of modern architecture, Le Havre is sure to impress! Le Havre is a fairly modern city, having been rebuilt rapidly between 1945 and 1964 after heavy bombing in 1944. Prefabricated materials and concrete were used in its reconstruction for the first time. In 2005, the entire city centre was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list. Le Havre was originally founded in 1517, and some historic areas remain, perfect for a leisurely stroll. The city also features many parks and gardens where you can relax and enjoy a picnic after sightseeing. There’s plenty to see and do, including:
André Malraux Museum of Modern Art (MuMa)
This is France’s second most important museum for Impressionist art, after the Musée d’Orsay in Paris. Its collection spans from the Middle Ages to the present day, so there’s much more to admire as well.
Le Havre Cathedral
Dating back to 1536, this is one of the oldest buildings in the city and serves as the seat of the Bishop of Le Havre.
The Town Hall
This building is a prime example of post-war modernist architecture.
